The Concept:
Think of laser cutting as drawing with light. A powerful laser beam cuts and engraves materials with amazing precision, turning digital designs into real-life creations. It's a process that blends creativity, technology, and craftsmanship to create unique, detailed pieces.
The Inspiration:
My passion for laser cutting comes from my love of creating meaningful and memorable pieces. I enjoy turning ideas into visually striking designs that make people feel special. For me, every creation is more than just an object; it's a way to leave a lasting impression and create something that can be cherished and remembered.
Beyond creating, I find joy in teaching others this skill. Sharing knowledge and helping people bring their own ideas to life allows me to spread creativity, kindness, and confidence through making. Below are several examples of my work, followed by a short description of the project.
Laser Cut Keyring Samples
Charity Keyring:
The first object I created using a laser cutter was a keyring. Unfortunately, I no longer have a picture of my first creation, but I still remember it clearly — it was a simple design with just my name on it.
The software I was taught to use for laser cutting was Inkscape. At the time, it was challenging to learn, especially because tutorials and resources were harder to find. However, with practice and patience, I can confidently say that I now have a much better understanding of the program and how to use it to bring my ideas to life.
Laser Cut Artwork Projects and Designs
Drawing To Laser Cut Art:
When I finally gained access to laser cutting machines such as the Glowforge and XTool machines, I discovered a new skill: turning drawings into real, physical creations.
While designs can be directly imported into laser cutting programs, there is a simple and reliable method that allows almost any drawing to become a laser-cut design.
The first step is creating the artwork and pushing the drawing to its full potential. The next step involves tracing the image with a black marker, which helps clearly define the areas where the laser cutter will engrave or cut.
The third step is scanning the design and exporting it as a PDF, which can then be transferred into Inkscape. Using the Trace Bitmap tool, the image is converted into a vector design, allowing it to be edited and prepared for laser cutting or engraving.
Understanding the difference between engraving and cutting is essential. Engraving involves removing or altering the top surface layer of a material, while cutting passes completely through the material to create separate pieces.
There are also several important settings to consider, including material type, power, and speed. These settings change depending on the material being used and are key to achieving the best final result.

Trophy Making
This was one of my most challenging projects at the time. My technical manager helped guide me through the process of designing and creating more complex laser-cut pieces.
The key to this design was understanding the mathematics behind it. To create a successful trophy, the design needed to fit perfectly into its chosen stand. This required carefully assessing the material being used, understanding its thickness, and calculating the correct measurements.
The neck of the trophy needed to fit securely into the stand, meaning the proportions and ratios had to be carefully calculated. Even small adjustments mattered, as the design needed to be only a few centimetres shorter than the stand opening to ensure a perfect fit.
Although the process was complex, the challenge was worth it. Seeing the finished piece become a meaningful award that celebrated an incredible achievement made all the careful planning and precision worthwhile.
The Teaching Of Laser Cutting:
After practising and developing my laser cutting skills over time, I have been able to take part in and lead various workshops that help spread the creativity and knowledge behind laser cutting.
These workshops allow others to experience the process first-hand by creating their own personalised designs, such as coasters and keyrings, while learning the fundamentals of designing, preparing, and producing their own laser-cut creations.
From a skill-building perspective, these workshops help people develop their technical abilities, build confidence, and improve their creative and drawing skills. It allows participants to experiment, learn through making, and see their ideas transform into real creations.
